Who gets relegated from the Premier League this season?

At present, bookmakers currently list Southampton (1/20), Nottingham Forest (2/7), and Leicester (4/5) as the three favourites to face the drop this season. So we decided to take a look into the Premier League relegation market.

However, the number of clubs that could still be playing Championship football next season is unprecedented. Everton, Leeds, West Ham, Bournemouth, Wolves, and even Palace will all be looking over their shoulders and scouting each other’s results.

Relegation Favourites

Southampton

It’s hard to see past Southampton occupying the 20th position come the end of the season. Nathan Jones’ miserable tenure was the Saints’ shortest-serving manager in the Premier League era (95 days).

Jones’ Southampton racked up 9 losses in a total of 14 games in charge, ultimately leading to his and the club’s demise.

Since then, Ruben Selles has taken over at St. Marys and despite a win against out-of-form Chelsea, a draw against 10 men Manchester United and a thrilling 3-3 draw with Spurs, it has been business as usual.

Southampton are joint-bottom scorers in the league this campaign with 24 (along with toothless Everton and over-crowded Nottingham Forest). Couple this with a pretty leaky defence and Southampton have a recipe for disaster.

Nottingham Forest

With 0 wins in 10, Steve Cooper’s men find themselves in 18^th, level on points with 17^th Everton. A goal swing of 10 in Everton’s favour is the only thing keeping Forest in the relegation places.

However, it’s not the results and scoring of the past that has the Forest faithful worrying. A quick look at the remaining fixtures is enough to make the whole of the City Ground wince.

With Arsenal challenging for the title, Liverpool and Brighton battling for European places and an away trip to Chelsea it is going to be tough.

I know football is played on grass but on paper, the only games that look “winnable” to me are Southampton, possibly Brentford, and Crystal Palace.

Palace *should* be on the beach by the time the last game of the season comes around.

Leicester City

Leicester find themselves ambling around in 19^th position, currently.

The Foxes let go of manager, Brendan Rodgers recently after slipping into the relegation zone after a defeat against Crystal Palace.

After previously successful seasons, (back-to-back 5th-placed finishes and an FA Cup trophy) Rodgers found himself in the relegation zone with a lousy 7 wins in 28 PL games.

Rodgers then became jobless on the same weekend as Graham Potter, making it a record-breaking season in terms of managers axed (12 – previous record 10).

Dean Smith has since taken over at the King Power and was dealt the unfair task of Man City (A) in his first game. Looking further into the future, Smith will know there are a few relegation 6-pointers coming up against, Leeds, Everton, and maybe even West Ham on the last game of the season.

Leicester are not down and out by any stretch, but it is a difficult task for Dean Smith and his men.

Who can get relegated from the Premier League in 2023?

After a terrible start under Frank Lampard, Sean Dyche’s Everton are priced at 21/20 to go down this season.

The toffees have a slightly better goal difference than relegation rivals Forest and with the expected re-introduction of Dominic Calvert-Lewin this weekend, the Blues will be wanting to creep up the table.

Everton also have slightly more favourable fixtures compared to Forest and Leeds, but they will not want to be relying on other teams’ results come the final day game at home to Bournemouth.

Leeds also find themselves mudded in a relegation scrap after two heavy home defeats against Crystal Palace (1-5) and Liverpool (1-6).

The teams around will be happy for the goal difference hit, but Leeds have scored a respectable 40 goals this season. Compared to their league-table neighbours that is a rather impressive return.

West Ham are going to be worrying slightly about their chances of relegation. I don’t expect them to go down but whilst it’s still mathematically possible they deserve a mention

The Hammers find themselves in the Europa Conference League still and if tonight’s home game against Gent goes to plan, they will be looking at potentially winning the competition.

This will be a slight hindrance for them but for a team with a goal difference of only -12 they should see themselves pick up enough points from the remaining games.

It’s their remaining fixtures that should cause worry. The Irons still have to face both Manchester clubs, Liverpool away and relegation rivals Leeds & Leicester the final two games of the season. Any slump in confidence or lack of momentum and Moyes’ team could find themselves lower than their current 15^th.

Likewise for Bournemouth and Gary O’Neil. The Cherries put faith in O’Neil and it paid off. Bournemouth have climbed to 14^th in the league after a very impressive 5 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses in their last 10 apps.

It again will fall to the Cherries’ run-in. They face relegation candidates West Ham, Southampton, Leeds, and Everton on the last day on what are massive games for O’Neil’s men.

Not only that but two tricky home games versus Chelsea and Manchester United sandwiched in between and it could all come crashing down for Bournemouth.
