Day 5 Round Up

In what can only be described as an unforgettable match, Daniel Altmaier pulled off a remarkable upset against Jannik Sinner in the men’s tournament at the French Open. The grueling five-set battle lasted a staggering five hours and 26 minutes, making it the longest match at the clay-court major this year.

Altmaier’s victory came after saving and wasting multiple match points before finally clinching a 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 1-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 triumph. The 24-year-old German, currently ranked 79th in the world, demonstrated unwavering determination and resilience throughout the match.

When asked about his extraordinary feat in saving Sinner’s match points, Altmaier humbly replied, “Playing every point with utmost effort is what keeps you grounded in reality. The level of competition speaks for itself. We’ve witnessed historic matches with numerous match points. I’m not sure if you can label this match as ‘historic,’ but I believe it is one that will be remembered.”

Despite faltering while serving for the match at 5-4 and witnessing Sinner save four match points in a nail-biting final game, Altmaier dug deep and sealed the victory, securing his second appearance in the third round on the red clay.

On the other side of the court, Sinner, bewildered by the turn of events, expressed his disappointment, saying, “What happened? That’s a good question. I had my chances but couldn’t find the right way to win the points. I was a bit unlucky at times, and he played some crucial shots. But that’s the nature of the sport. I will undoubtedly come back stronger.”

In other matches at the French Open, last year’s runner-up Casper Ruud booked his spot in the next round with a hard-fought four-set victory over Giulio Zeppieri of Italy. The fourth seed is now set to face China’s Roland Garros newcomer, Zhang Zhizhen, in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Germany’s 22nd seed Alexander Zverev, a two-time semifinalist in the previous two years, breezed through his second-round match against Alex Molcan of Slovakia in straight sets. Zverev’s dominant performance sets up an exciting third-round clash with the 12th seed, Frances Tiafoe.
