French Open Day 2 Recap
Flavio Cobolli’s journey through the qualifying rounds at Roland Garros culminated in a first main draw appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, where he faced the formidable top seed, Carlos Alcaraz. The match started off with a display of dominance as Alcaraz swiftly claimed the first set in just 26 minutes. The second set followed suit, but the Italian managed to secure two games. Cobolli’s resilience shone through in the third set, where he impressively secured five games in a 64-minute battle, marking a significant achievement against his formidable opponent.
While Cobolli fought his own battle, Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka showcased his enduring spirit against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Wawrinka, the 38-year-old warhorse, fought his way to a two-set lead, only to face a resurgence from the Spaniard in a thrilling comeback. The match eventually stretched over four hours and 35 minutes, with Wawrinka emerging victorious. Reflecting on the gripping contest, Wawrinka expressed his gratitude for the support from the fans, which fueled his determination to fight until the end.
The tournament witnessed more intense clashes, one of which saw the mercurial Frenchman Benoit Paire pitted against the 14th seed, Cameron Norrie from Britain. Paire, currently ranked 149th in the world, acknowledged the quality of the match despite his loss in five sets. However, he couldn’t resist voicing his discontent with the tennis balls used, claiming they hindered his attacking style of play. Paire’s frustration echoed throughout the court, yet he acknowledged Norrie’s superior performance.
Moving on to the night matches, organizers adjusted the schedule to ensure spectators could return home conveniently. As the world beatbox champions, Berywam, entertained the crowd, anticipation built for the match between local hero Alexandre Muller and the eighth seed, Jannik Sinner. The atmosphere was electric, with the beatbox champions utilizing their vocal talents to support the French player.
