Bayern Munich v Manchester City

Bayern Munich will need a miracle to overcome a 3-0 deficit when they host Manchester City in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim over the weekend, Bayern’s focus will shift to trying to avoid becoming just the third team to lose both legs of a UCL knockout tie, having done so twice previously against Real Madrid.

The Bavarians’ form is a cause for concern, having scored more than once in only one of their last six games. Moreover, they have never overturned such a large first-leg deficit in the UCL.

Manager Thomas Tuchel will need to pull off a tactical masterstroke to turn things around and avoid a third consecutive personal defeat to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

City, on the other hand, come into the match on a high, having won their last ten games in all competitions and are undefeated since early February (W12, D2).

Guardiola’s men will be keen to wrap up a semi-final spot and move closer to the elusive UCL title, which they are yet to win.

City has won only one of their last six European away games (D4, L1), which may provide some hope for Bayern.

The match could see a duel between two of the most prolific goal scorers in the competition.

Sadio Mane, who has ten career goals against City, could be out of the bad books and be asked to lead the line for Bayern.

With only 3 goals in their last 4 games, they need all the help they can get. Quarrel with clubmate Leroy Sane seems to have been put right, and Mane has served his suspension.

Meanwhile, City’s Erling Haaland needs one more goal to equal Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of 12 strikes in a single UCL campaign by a Premier League player, and in a season of breaking records this one seems inevitable.

Bayern will have to summon all their strength to prevent a premature end to their UCL campaign, while City will look to maintain their excellent form and take a step closer to the title.
