Yesterday Thursday the 13th gave the tournament the biggest surprise of them all when world number 1 Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the tournament in 3 sets by Italian youngster Lorenzo Musetti 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Musetti has displayed the fact that he has talent before but this time he confirmed it with his biggest win. Djokovic did not have his best day and that was clear with the amount of unforced errors that he was making, but he will bounce back in the upcoming tournaments. Daniil Medvedev continued to surprise himself with yet another win, this time over Alexander Zverev 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 with the latter failing to serve it out twice and also missing 2 match points. Good wins also for Struff and Rublev in straight sets against Ruud and Khachanov respectively. Sinner and Fritz on the other hand had tougher battles on needed 3 sets to overcome their respective opponents Hurkacz and Lehecka. Stefanos Tsitsipas is continuing to build up his form and looked very solid against Jarry which match he won 6-3, 6-4.
Quarter Final Previews
Andrey Rublev vs Jan-Lennard Struff
Andrey Rublev is the heavy favourite in this match with odds of around 1.40 and this is also understandable as he is the world number 6 compared to his opponent who is currently at 100. However recent form should be considered when analysing this match as the German has been playing incredible tennis this week playing 5 matches (including Qualifying) and dropping only one set. Struff his a heavy ball and has aggressive ground strokes and if he is on he can beat his higher ranked opponent. My feeling is that Struff has a good chance of winning if he gets a good start, but if he does it will be in straight sets because if he gives Rublev a chance to get into the match the experience will pull him through.
Prediction: Struff to win in straight sets. @ 5.5
Taylor Fritz vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Taylor Fritz has shown decent form this week despite clay not being his favourite surface, whilst on the other hand Tsitsipas has been building on his form after injury but clay is his best surface and he has done very well here before. Despite being the heavy favourite at around 1.35 I don’t think Tsitsipas will have such an easy match. Fritz has a bigger serve and also strong ground strokes and if he has a good serving day I expect a battle.
Prediction: Tsitsipas to win 2-1 in sets @ 3.50
Daniil Medvedev vs Holger Rune
The young Dane is the favourite in this match with odds of around 1.75 but that is mainly die to the surface that they are playing on. Rune has only played one match this week against Thiem where he looked strong but was not really challenged as Thiem didn’t play great. On the other Hand Daniil has had 2 matches and both of them were tough, he is looking better the more he plays. I expect the Russian to continue to gain confidence and play even better today. He will be consistent and give Rune constant deep balls and will also defend well which will cause Rune to struggle.
Prediction: Medvedev to Win @ 2.10
Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Musetti
Musetti is coming off of the biggest win of his career and will have very high confidence however today he will be facing a different match. Djokovic gifted many unforced errors yesterday and Sinner will much likely not give away almost nothing. Sinner’s shot are flatter than Djokovic’s and this will be more in Musetti’s favour and can help him gain the upper hand in rallies. Bookmakers put Sinner as heavy favourite with odds of around 1.35 but in my opinion these odds are too short. I expect Sinner to win but not that easily.
Prediction: Over 21.5 Games @ 1.85
