The second round of the Italian Open in Rome saw the bottom half of the draw come into action, with several big names in action. World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz won an all-Spanish affair against veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas to advance to the third round. Alcaraz had won the Madrid Masters just six days prior and showed his form by relying on his powerful serve, winning 81% on first serve and hitting three aces. Alcaraz seemed to be in a hurry as the match neared its end, dropping just one point as he swept through the final three games to take the match in 87 minutes. Andrey Rublev, the World No. 6, also advanced to the next round after defeating Alex Molcan in straight sets. Rublev had won in Monte-Carlo and is eyeing a famous double that should set him up well for Roland-Garros.
Other players who advanced include Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who cruised past Australian Jason Kubler, and Borna Coric, who beat Thiago Monteiro in a three hour and 34-minute epic. Hubert Hurkacz, the World No. 15, was upset by J.J. Wolf in just 77 minutes, while Roberto Carballes Baena won a near four-hour long three-setter against Britain’s Dan Evans. The Italian Lorenzo Sonego pulled off an upset win over No. 25 seed Yoshi Nishioka. The clay-court event in Rome is considered one of the key indicators of a player’s hopes of winning the French Open, along with the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Madrid Open.
