Despite a gloomy day weather wise at the Foro Italico sports complex in Rome, we had some great tennis matches that raised the heat up and atmosphere all around. The most anticipated match of the day was Andy Murray vs Fabio Fognini not only because of some of their past heated rivalries but also because Fognini was playing in front of his home fans and the atmosphere was amazing. The Italian has not been playing his best tennis recently and has struggled for wins but the home energy pumped him up and he played some of his best tennis of recent years. Andy Murray himself just came from winning a high quality challenger event and he went into the match as favourite. The first saw Fognini going for his shots and hitting some great winners giving him an early break. Murray fought on and had many break chances which were lost giving Fognini the opportunity to close out the set at 6-4. As expected Murray fought back and started the second set very positively and pressured the Italian taking a 5-1 lead but couldn’t close out the set at his first chance but eventually closed it at 6-4. The decider was very similar to the first set with Fognini taking an early break and played his service games magnificently and did not face a single break point in the set closing it out at 6-4.
Early in the day Stan Wawrinka looked extremely solid in beating Ivashka decisively 6-2, 6-4. Good wins also for Tomas Martin Etcheverry who beat a very tricky van Assche 7-6, 6-3 and also Alexander Bublik is looking better and more consistent week by week and his 6-3, 7-6 win over Martinez is a reflection of that. Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Juame Munar also seemed like an exciting match judging by their last fiery and controversial match in Madrid but Munar retired injured when he was 4-2 down in the first set. Another disappointing week at the office for Richard Gasquet as he is booted out by Yibing Wu after having won the first set.
Weather forecasts for the next 7 days are looking even worse with rain and thunderstorms predicted but today we can expect some decent weather and lots of play and here are my predictions for the day:
Altmaier 2-0 Zeppieri
Pella to beat Cressy
Hanfmann to beat Jarry
Grenier to beat Wolf
Humbert v Ruusuvuori Over 22.5 games
