With the Mutua Madrid Open nearing the business end the amount of matches decrease but the match ups become tougher and tougher and the first evidence of this was the epic battle between Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista-Agut which lasted just 5 minutes shy of 3 hours with the Russian outlasting the Spaniard to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Jaume Munar also had a battle on his hands as he ended the satisfying journey of young Italian Matteo Arnaldi who got through qualifying. This was sweet revenge for Munar who avenged his lost just 12 days ago against Arnaldi eventually winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Alexander Zverev was a total contrast on the other hand as he needed less than an hour to dispose of Hugo Grenier and losing just one game in his 6-1, 6-0 win. Also something hard to believe is that it took Zverev 35 min!

World number 6 Andrey Rublev also had a comfortable win beating Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 7-5. A straight sets victory also for Borna Coric who beat Hubert Hurkacz 7-6, 6-3 who after a slow start to his clay court season seems to be picking up very quick. Carlos Alcaraz beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 7-5 proving to be too much for the Bulgarian. Both player played some very attractive tennis but the all round tennis from the Spaniard was the key in advancing to the last 16. Also a good win for Daniel Altmaier who beat compatriot Yannick Hanfmann 7-6, 6-3. Sunday’s matches at Madrid ended with a surprise with Holger Rune getting eliminated by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6, 5-7, 7-6.
Here are my predictions for today:
Shevchenko to win a set vs Medvedev
Cachin to win a set vs Tiafoe
De Minaur 2-0 Karatsev
Lajovic 2-0 Struff
Garin to win a set vs Fritz
